Statewide Tornado Drill @ 10:15am!

It is that time of year again for the state of Indiana! Severe weather season is approaching us very quickly, and it is Severe Weather Preparedness Week for the state of Indiana. Today, at 10:15am, Ball State University as well as Delaware County Emergency Management Agency will sound the outdoor warning sirens as part of the annual Indiana Statewide Tornado Drill. A reminder that THIS IS ONLY A TEST! While severe weather is not in the forecast for today, it is a good time to review your tornado safety plan, whether you are at an academic building, dormitory, apartment, home, etc.

The ideal safe place to be when a tornado should strike is in a basement or a storm cellar. If there is no basement or storm cellar available, your next safe shelter option is the most interior room on the LOWEST LEVEL away from doors and windows and put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Additionally, put any mattresses or blankets over your head as well as pillows and helmets to prevent significant injury to the head and neck region. Your worst options are the attic of your home, a vehicle, highway underpasses, and a mobile home. If you are in a mobile home, move to the closest substantial shelter. If that shelter is too far away, lay flat in a low lying ditch and cover your head with your hands.
