Afternoon Forecast/Discussion, 2/16/2024: Snow Way!

Good afternoon & Happy Friday, Cardinal Country! As we speak, the snow is picking up, and will continue to do so through the afternoon as an area of low pressure and an associated frontal boundary roll through just to our south. That boundary is a pseudo-warm front of sorts south of I-70 that will serve as the focus of some impressive energy/lift to help develop heavier snow just later on this afternoon as you can see on the map below. The data there comes from just a couple hours ago where a heavier snow band dropped visibilities in Central Illinois to 1/4 of a mile and caused accumulation on the roadways. That quick accumulation (as you can see on the grass -and almost the road – looking out the door at noon time as I write this) & dropped visibility will make for hazardous driving conditions, so if you must travel, travel slow & be careful! In all, 2-4 inches of this white stuff is possible with locally higher amounts just north of I-70, so quite the wintry scene will develop. Local schools and businesses + road crews in the towns across Cardinal Country, keep a close eye on the situation, and let’s all have a safe and sound start to the weekend!
