Winter Driving Safety

Winter driving can be very intimidating. We hear horror stories about slide offs and fender benders but here are a few tips and tricks to make sure you can avoid them.

The number one-way winter slide offs can be prevented is simple. SLOW DOWN! Decreasing speed makes it easier to stop and makes a car more manageable to control if a slide occurs. Another tip that goes hand in hand with slowing down is increasing following distance. This can give you more time to break at a red light. Also, this is helpful in an emergency because it can give you more time to avoid the car in front of you.

Another tip for winter driving is to have a safety kit in your car. In the event of an emergency you need to have some basic necessities. Here is a list of some basic supplies as per the National Weather Service.

  • Snow shovel
  • Water/Food
  • Jumper Cables
  • Flashlight
  • Blanket
  • Ice scraper

Winter Driving can be scary, but it does not have to be. If you set aside extra time and go slow on the roadways you will be a trouper!
