Barrow, Alaska, sits at 71°N latitude, which is around 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle. On November 19, 2022, polar night set in for Barrow, Alaska. This continuous 24-hour darkness would be there for 65 days. The phenomenon of polar night stems from the Northern Hemisphere being tilted from the sun. From the Arctic Circle at 66.5°N latitude to the North Pole, the sun will not be seen here. Yesterday (Monday 1/23/23), the sun rose in Barrow for the first time this year. The day was only an hour long. This time will increase until May 12 when there will be 24 hours of daylight (midnight sun) in Barrow.
