There is cold, then there is brutally cold! The morning low of 9 °F observed this Sunday January 19th here in Munice was cold. Then there’s standard setting cold observed 49 years ago today from a observation station at Prospect Creek, Alaska. On January 23rd, 1971 just off of Alaska State Highway 11 an observation station in Prospect Creek recorded a brutally cold temperature of -80 °F!
Prospect Creek is located about 200 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska in the center of the state. This makes the tiny settlement vulnerable to temperature extremes.
